Event Details

CHARLES DICKENS was born on February 7th 1812 in a shabby suburb of Portsmouth. Shortly afterwards the family moved to London. Literally self taught, at the age of 19, Charles became a reporter, recording the parliamentary speeches of Daniel O’ Connell, the Irish Liberator, retaining a lifelong mutual admiration. He also became a devotee of the works of Thomas Moore.

In August 1858, the first of three lengthy visits to Dublin, he was hailed with delight everywhere he went. He found it difficult to make his way from Morrison’ s Hotel (Nassau St.) and through the crowds who were queuing to see his performance in the Rotunda Concert Room.

Dickens in Dublin, written and performed by Laurence Foster, is a recreation of that dramatic evening in Ireland s capital city!
