London 2012 Festival - the largest UK-wide cultural celebration ever staged.
In his opening keynote presentation, Nick Dodds, Managing Director of the leading arts consultancy FEI, reveals some of the many challenges faced in delivering the cultural programme that ran parallel to the London 2012 Olympics. Nick Dodds played an instrumental role in the planning and execution of the praised cultural programme that made the Olympic year memorable not only to Londoners, but to all of Great Britain and many thousands of visitors from abroad.

Innovative Marketing - Old Fashioned?
Innovative marketer Sebastian Hesse, founder of the Berlin-based company "Big Bang & Whisper", takes a starting point in interesting social media tools and discusses the linkage between programming, actual media content, desired target audiences, and the overall brand experience. Drawing on examples of best practice and the use of "fascination triggers", he reveals how the art of storytelling can help convey an idea and provide a bigger picture of what will happen, bringing audiences a sense of not wanting to miss an upcoming event. Sebastian Hesse is an expert and consultant for Communications and Business Development with a track record in international PR and marketing communications of more than 10 years, including 6 years at Weber Shandwick, one of the leading international PR firms. He counselled numerous NGOs and companies such as Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mia Farrow's Dream for Darfur, Bertelsmann Foundation, Ski Dubai / Mall of the Emirates, eBay Germany, Vattenfall, Russian Standard Vodka and L'Oréal.

Festival and Events practice, education, research, and professional development: Harnessing opportunities
This session is led by Bournemouth University's Caroline Jackson, Ivana Rihova, Debbie Sadd, and Matt Frew. They will address wide-ranging relationships between festivals, cultural events, higher education, research, and the exchange of knowledge between universities and the sector. Specifically, they address the "translation" and sharing of knowledge developed by researchers, educators, and practitioners. They will also consider the "co-creation" experience by audiences and festival organisers and also projects involving visual arts, tourism, and the development and application of emerging technologies.

Isomorphism in the festival and events industry
Presented by Professor Drs. Wes Wierda, InHolland University.
Nowadays there is a huge economic pressure on the festival and event industry. Budgets are cut, taxes increased, investors and governments withdraw and consumer spending is declining. The response of the industry has a similar pattern. Exploitation models have to be strengthened. New ‘Holy Grails’ are introduced simultaneously. 'Social media', 'cultural education' and 'business clubs' should save the industry from destruction and secure companies valuable social and economic market shares. However, there are creative solutions for each specific event or festival that need to be distinguished. Professor and economist, Wes Wierda of InHolland University explains how this behaviour can be partly explained by the neo-institutional theory of Dimaggio and Powell (1983). Their mechanism of isomorphism remarkably supports the unconscious behaviour of the festival and event industry. He presents a dynamic model of market transformation of the creative industries, supported by research findings.

Following a few concise delegate presentations on the issues that are "Hot" in the festivals and events sector of their own countries, we'll open up a floor debate to which all delegates are invited to input ideas, comments and observations. You can use this forum to, express your concerns, share success stories (or your disappointments!), in order to reveal an accurate "state-of-affairs" of our industry across various European markets.
The session will be moderated jointly by Colm Croffy, CEO of the Association of Irish Festival Events, and Charlotte DeWitt of International Events Ltd.

Eurosonic – more than a music festival
Since its inception in 1986, the Eurosonic Noorderslag held in Groningen has grown to become one of the most significant music festivals in Europe. It is famed for presenting a combination of up-and-coming bands and well-established headliners, and not least a unique cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union. But can Eurosonic and other European music festivals maintain relevance and public interest in the years ahead? In this keynote address, Peter Smidt, founder and creative director of the Eurosonic, will provide an "insider's look" at his own organisation and share his perspective on challenges and changes to music festivals in the decade to come.

Sponsorship - the ins and outs of the International Film Festival Rotterdam
Festival director, Janneke Staarink, reveals how the IFFR is organised, and in particular how the organisation works with sponsors. She will reveal processes that deliver winning sponsorship strategies through to the successful implementation of sponsor services during the Festival period. For many years, the IFFR has proven its value to its sponsors, and the festival may easily serve as a role-model for other organisers of cultural events.

The European Cultural Capitals and EU festival funding
Caught between its Austrian-Hungarian history and post-socialist reality; original in its multi-cultural identity and well aware of its opportunities as the second largest city in Slovakia; Košice is bursting with culture this year. The foundation of Kosice2013 is the "Interface" project that seeks to embrace the City's dual role as the metropolis of the Carpathian region and its geographical position close by the Schengen border. Creating a metaphoric ’gateway’ to Eastern Europe, the Interface project displays a cultural and artistic programme that becomes a platform for new communication in the European cultural area. It brings with it a lot of innovative ideas, has a clear European dimension, and offers opportunities for cultural exchanges that mutually enriches Košice and its European partners. Meet the Tourism & Regional Development Manager of Kosice2013, Peter Germuska, when he presents the programming aims, community engagement aspect, and the expected tourism and economic impact of Kosice's unique European Cultural Capital project.

Based on examples from the Millennium celebration of Singapore’s Chinese New Year, the Kuala Lumpur International Buskers Festival, and other events, Charlotte DeWitt of International Events Ltd. outlines how participation, collaboration, and co-operation between IFEA members in the past has led to successful events, and how not only organisers, but also audiences, may benefit directly from international co-operation. Maybe the session will inspire you and your event to nurture your international partners?

In recent years, NHTV - University of Applied Sciences - in Breda, The Netherlands, has carried out extensive research in event marketing; the customer journey; the visitor experience; and parallel topics of high relevance to those seeking to improve knowledge of their audiences. Important aspects of this research have been undertaken in collaboration with Rotterdam Festivals. Learn all about the theoretical elements and practical undertakings of the research in this highly informative session headed by NHTV faculty members Margo Rooijackers, Gert Jan Remmers, Dorothé Gerritsen, and Ronald van Olderen.

Trinidad & Tobago: A Celebration Paradise
Samuel Sankar, CFEE, is coordinator of Sport and Tourism at the Tourism Development Company of Trinidad and Tobago. This Caribbean republic covering 5.128 square kilometers is a diverse, multi-cultural country where just about everything is celebrated. Their world famous Carnival featuring Calypso music and steel drum bands is the highlight for many, but there are many festivals, concerts and special events happening throughout the year. In 2012, Trinidad and Tobago was a recipient of the IFEA's World Festival and Event City Award, recognized for community leadership and outstanding festival and event partnerships. This presentation will tell you why!

Keynote by UK based innovation producer and entrepreneur Rohan Gunatilake.
Having completed two years as the lead producer of the Edinburgh Festivals Innovation Lab, Rohan Gunatilake now helps run ‘Sync’, which works to support arts organisations across Scotland enjoy a more progressive relationship with technology and technologists. Sync's activities include Culture Hack Scotland, Geeks-in-Residence and the magazine SyncTank. He also produces wellbeing apps and in 2012 ‘Wired’ magazine named him in their Smart List of 50 people who are about to change the world.

What are the most important industry issues and trends in Europe, what tools and skills do festival organisers need to have to stay ahead of the game; how do we best prepare the next generation of event managers? Founded in 1992, the International Festivals and Events Association Europe - IFEA Europe - is the European affiliate of IFEA World. For the past 50 years, IFEA has served as the global network organization for professionals who work in the cultural festivals and public events sector. The IFEA is represented in 40 countries on 5 continents and it is the worlds largest network for festivals & events. It spans the industry from world-renowned cultural festivals to small community events.
Members of IFEA come together to share ideas. knowledge and best practice, to facilitate personal and professional development and to promote networking and international exchange.
Members include public and private organisers, city officials, festival managers and marketing personnel, tourist destination organisations, venue managers, suppliers, academic researchers, and many others. IFEA is also open to students aiming for a professional career in public events management.

For the last 18 years, ARCUB — The Cultural Center of the City of Bucharest has been the main actor that developed the Romanian Capital’s cultural identity. With a wide range of performances that include theatre, music, architecture, fine arts and publishing, as well as a significant portfolio of partnerships with various organizations and institutions with similar profiles, ARCUB became synonym with Bucharest’s art and culture.
ARCUB is the organizer of the International Festival of Street Theatre — B-FIT in the Street!, of the only international jazz festival in the Capital, Bucharest Jazz Festival, and Bucharest Music Film Festival, an appreciated international classical music event.
Also, 2014 marks the year ARCUB is moving its headquarters, in Gabroveni Inn, a place filled with history and a piece of Bucharest’s finest architecture. Even though, at the time, the building was not completely restored, Gabroveni Inn already hosted a series of cultural gatherings during Bucharest Jazz Festival.
Located in the Old Center of Bucharest, Gabroveni Inn is becoming a very modern cultural center – auditoriums, exhibition spaces, conference rooms – an interesting mix between the old and the new, painting the exact cultural scene of Bucharest.
