Kites were invented more than 28 centuries ago by the Chinese.
They are still one of the most enlightening and uplifting forms of fusion between art and craft. In the Eastern parts of the World and in South America, they are a major part of recreational activities performed by both adults and children. In achieving the making of a kite the artist needs to mix manual and artistic skills.
Three major aspects of the activity -
1. Manual aspect : making of the kite : handling of pencils, tape, glue, scissors, etc... in order to acquire a long lasting skills.
2. Decoration: to create in the children an early awareness of fine arts through the use of major artistic topics (ethnic, modern, abstract...). Handling of acrylic paint, brushes, etc...
3. Environmental aspect : the flight is the magical climax of the whole process. Seeing and feeling one's own work of art pulled by the wind has an incredible impact on all the participants no matter how old or young.
