Irish Culture is well known all over the world for revolving around the pub. Even more stereotypical is the pint of Guinness, the international symbol for Irish-ness everywhere. I’d love to say this is isn’t true but having taken a stroll around Dublin last Saturday to clear my mind, I was agitated and looking for something to do. Determined not to go for a pint for fear I would end up staying out late, I decided to look for something that I could just walk into, meet people and now have to buy a drink. Now I could have walked into any bar or club and just not drank but I wanted to be around sober people! I often find intoxicated folk unbearable unless I’m on a similar wavelength.

The truth was staggering. I was left with very little options showing just how much Dublin and even the rest of Ireland need to trying socialising without alcohol. Now, looking up cool and interesting things to do in Dublin is a part of what I do for a living yet I was still at a loss. As a result, I’ve compiled a list of sober events that you can attend. You’ll have a real blast, meet new people and avoid any looming hangovers.

The Dublin Market Rave

This is an amazing concept. Although many events are playing on the “Rave” element to get hype going about them, shopping to some bangers around other people is always a good buzz! Some of Dublin’s finest vendors are making their way to The Dublin Market Rave to flog their wares. This is great news for two reasons. 1) Dublin needs more markets 2) This would be a great way to kick start a sober night out.

Clubbercise

So, what happens if you get an energy filled dance class, fill it with some disco lights/glow sticks and put some banging dance tunes on? Well, you get Clubbercise! It’s a franchise and run by JP in Ireland! I’ve met JP and he’s an absolute gent. A great way to work out, avoid alcohol and get some tunes in. A fantastic way to meet people. Also, lads it’s 80-90% females so put Tinder away for a minute and put on the sports kit!

Funky Seomra

Funky Seomra has been around for a very long time. Events aren’t as regular as we’d like them to be but they’ve obviously picked a formula that’s worked. Keep up to date with all their shenanigans on Facebook! It’s been described as a mini electric picnic. Expect healthy food, Oxygen Bars, massage stations and much more. Dave Mooney, the man behind Funky Seomra is one of the nicest guys you could meet and runs a solid show!

Morning Gloryville

Not a drink in sight yet everyone is jumping mad to the music. But wait, it’s not at night time but rather 6:30am in the heart of Dublin! The goal here is creating hype and distraction so you don’t think of needing alcohol to dance. In fact, most people are heading off to work afterwards. Expect Yoga, Massage, MCs, DJs, performers, festival decor and a whole lot more. Usually they come packed with a theme depending on which charity they are working with. Typically takes place at the end of each month. Their next event takes place on the 25th of November and you can pick up your tickets here.

Soda Bread Box

Not so long ago, I coined an article after having the most unusual Monday evening. It was where I stumbled across Soda Bread Box, an after work dance experience in the pitch black. It only lasts one hour but to be honest any more and you may go mad. However, it was a lot of fun and I’d highly recommend everyone gives it a go. If you want to know more, check out their site. Film Base closing for renovations means they are currently working on a new venue so keep your eyes peeled. It takes place on a Monday evening every week.

Flux Alcohol and Drug Free Nightclub

These guys have hit the nail on the head but have been off the radar since their last event in April. Having gotten several write ups the feed back has been very positive. Let’s hope this doesn’t just disappear like many sober clubs before it like “Sober Saturdays”!

Milk and Cookie Stories

On the second Tuesday of the each month, a secret Dublin venue is transformed into a giant living room. Duvets are unfurled, cushions are strewn, cookies and cupcakes are circulated and then the magic happens. Founded on the belief that everyone has a story to tell. They aim to provide a place where people can do just that… a place with tea, cookies, cushions and friends. A great first date if ever you were stuck for ideas to break down the barriers with your crush.

Sober Slice

Essentially, if you don’t like any of the activities I’ve mentioned above here is you next best bet. It’s  a community of those looking to meet other sober people and go to non alcoholic events with each other. The activities vary from time to time but you can scroll through the many options. Some are a little bland but there is something for everything. Or, if you are feeling rather adventurous, why not create your own!
