An article I wrote last week on Dublin’s best burrito caused quite a stir. There’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition to improve service for everyone. However, as a result, many fine folk have been asking, “burritos are great but what about the real issue here? Who does Dublin’s best chicken wings?” I’m fully aware of the heated debate it can bring – often needing to check over your shoulder before boasting of your favourite for fear of becoming engaged in a heated argument.
I asked a group of 54 individuals comprised of students, officer workers, families and some social butterflies about town. Unlike the usual few popping up near the top again and again, there were a few new names floating around. The results were interesting:
10 – Captain Americas
Well known for nailing the classics, they’ve gotten it right with their wings. Regardless of the the amount of stiff competition out there, the fact these guys have been here a while is testament to their offering. I wouldn’t go ordering a large main course afterwards!
9 – Canal Bank
Based on Leeson Street, these folks know exactly what they are doing when it comes to giving the public what they want. Their menu is internationally influenced with lots of options. I will say they’re a lot pricier than some of the other top dogs on this list at €13.95 for a portion and this pushes them a little further down the list. We’re looking at value for money here too!
8 – Brewdock
Located right at the Busaras Luas stop it’s almost worth getting off just for the wings. Best part is that they sell them BY THE KILO. If you love wings, your heart should have fluttered just there. Wings go well with beer and what a selection they have!
7 – Tribeca
Brought to you by the same people who brought you Canal Bank, it makes sense that the wings in both would be simply divine. I couldn’t notice much of a difference but popular vote rules on this one. It’s a classy but not too classy spot, the only problem is it’s a little further out for those of you who, like myself, are city centre slickers. I highly recommend popping by if you are in the neighbourhood.
6 – Harbour Master
I have only been recently made aware of the Harbour Master. The good folks in NCI were ready to fight it out to testify how good the wings are here. Frequented by many working the IFSC and students who have discovered this golden nugget.
To be fair, I wasn’t surprised Camden Rotisserie ranked so highly. This place focuses its offering around chicken so this made sense. John Paul – who runs the show here – is a friendly fellow and the wings really are truly delicious. My mouth is watering writing this.
4 – Just Wing It
Let’s talk about going even more niche with your offering. Not only is it chicken, but they pride themselves on their wings so much, they named their business after it. Their first store opened out in Tallaght and then others popped up around the city. I can see why this is a favourite – the wings are delicious. Test your ability to take on the heat; they can go as hot as they need to.
3 – Soder & Ko
Soder & Ko is a breath of fresh air. I recently tried these as part of a bento board on Tuesday and I was pleasantly surprised. The coating was perfect and it seems as though many at neighbouring tables had also made the smart decision. The rest of the food is stunning but if it’s wings and cocktails you’re looking for, look no further.
2 – Herb Street
There’s a very good reason why it’s almost impossible to get a table at Herb Street during lunchtime. The tables inside and out are completely packed so there’s not a hope you’ll get near here unless you’ve made a booking. People come from all the nearby offices and I’m not saying it’s because of the wings but they’re certainly a very popular order. Staff are quick and friendly, the portions appropriate with the option to supersize your portion for a few extra euro.
Out in front but not by much, there are those who would die by the sword defending the wings in this place. Elephant & Castle has been extremely consistent in providing excellent wings time and time again. With the most votes, Elephant & Castle are deemed the winner… for now!
