About this event

3 - Engaging with Sculpture: Mixed Media

Friday 21 January, 1pm (Zoom)

The third of the monthly presentations on aspects of sculpture in Dublin ‘Engaging with Sculpture’, curated by UCD emeritus professor, Paula Murphy, will focus on mixed media.

This talk will examine the use of mixed media in sculpture in the city and include discussion with sculptor Isabel Nolan, who uses a range of different media in her work. It will recognise the extent to which sculpture today can be made out of anything. A visit to Isabel Nolan's studio will reveal the varied materials and processes that can be involved in the making of a piece of sculpture and the reasons for using them.

The conversation will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Isabel Nolan is a multidisciplinary artist - she has an expansive practice that incorporates sculptures, paintings, textile works, photographs, writing and works on paper. Exploring the “intimacy of materiality”, Nolan’s work ranges from the architectural – steel sculptures that frame or obstruct our path – to small handmade objects in Jesmonite, large hand-tufted wool rugs, to drawings made in watercolour or colouring pencils, and water-based oil paintings. Sources for her imagery range from observations of the cosmos, medieval illuminated manuscripts, to palaeolithic sculpture.

Paula Murphy is an emeritus professor in UCD Art History and Cultural Policy, where sculpture has been the focus of her research. Her publications include Nineteenth-Century Irish Sculpture, Native Genius Reaffirmed (Yale, 2010) and Sculpture 1600-2000, vol. 3 in the 5-vol. Royal Irish Academy’s Art and Architecture of Ireland (Yale, 2014). She was a recipient of the RHA Gold Medal in 2015. In 2016/17 she held a Terra Foundation Senior Fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) in Washington D.C. She has served on the board of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Sculptors’ Society of Ireland (now Visual Artists Ireland) and is currently a member of the Steering Group of DCC’s Sculpture Dublin.
