Description

Our February meetup will feature presentations, demos and discussions.

Presentations

(1) SKMMP Augmented Reality Digital Showroom Holograms

After featuring as a Startup of the Week in October, SKMMP was named by SiliconRepublic as one of 30 superb Irish tech start-ups to watch in 2019. SKMMP is "the first fashion and lifestyle wholesale platform to employ the digital capabilities of AR within the physical showroom space". Founder and CEO Aileen Carville will talk about their Augmented Reality digital showroom holograms.

(2) Enhancing Wellness Through Physiologically Controlled Immersive Video Games

Joey Campbell is a researcher and lecturer in Immersive Environments at Cork Institute of Technology, as well as a freelance mixed reality developer. He is also an external PhD student at Bristol University’s Interaction & Graphics Lab, where he is in the final phase of a practice-based PhD, which is focused on exploring how physiologically controlled video games influence physical exertion. To date his work has been published at international conferences such as ACM TEI and ACM CHI. His work was also featured in the weekly tech blog Hack-A-Day and showcased by Epic Games in their developer section. At present Joey is the creative developer for two EU funded projects with Univerdad Europa’s eXtended Reality Lab and UK based games company Caped Koala. Some topics he will discuss during his presentation are: body actuation, dynamic haptics, biofeedback loops, game engine sensor integration and tangible reality. Joey will also demo his VR work (see below).

(3) Eye Tracking in AR/VR, Prospects and Bottlenecks

Anuradha Kar is a PhD student at NUI Galway and works on deriving methods for analyzing and predicting performance of eye trackers for consumer applications. Enabling eye tracking in AR/VR environments has the potential to create more immersive experiences, enhanced user interaction and help to collect valuable human behavioral data that can be used for studying attention, interest and engagement. However, integrating eye tracking abilities in AR/VR is non-trivial and setup complexities and issues with reliability often hamper the prospects of eye tracking in these environments. This talk will present some of the significant benefits of eye tracking for AR/VR as well as challenges faced by this perceptive technology.

(4) The Expanse - Social VR Platform and Content Creation Tool

The Expanse is "social VR for the masses" in which you can "build worlds with our simple content creator". In The Expanse you can load in 3D models from your favourite 3D app including Google Poly and Sketchfab. The Expanse has its roots AltspaceVR where Shane Harris created Shane's Editor which was publicly launched in May 2018 by no less than Alex Kipman - Microsoft's head of Mixed Reality, Hololens and Kinect. In a few short weeks Shane had hundreds of users and hundreds of separate scenes created by users in AltspaceVR. So it's going to be really interesting to see where he goes next, with The Expanse.

Demos
