Join us at the Rediscovery Centre for a day of DIY for Climate with expert DIY'ers in association with Dublin City Council.

About this event

Join us at the Rediscovery Centre for a day of DIY for Climate! This event is hosted in association with Dublin City Council.

We’ve got an eclectic mix of expert DIY’ers to show you their skills. All events are FREE. These events will include:

  • Bike health checks and a bike repair clinic to show you how to fix your bike.
  • A furniture upcycling workshop to teach you how to take that furniture find from drab to fab.
  • A demonstration of how to build your own rainwater planter to spruce up your front or back garden.
  • There will also be tours of the Rediscovery Centre so you can learn more about the building and what we do.

Calling all families: can you design a model device that could clean up ocean litter? Come to our centre to take part in our fun challenge to design and build a model device that could clean up ocean litter in our model ocean.

  • 11am - Introduction to Bike Maintenance

Join the Rediscovery Centre for an introduction to bike maintenance. This demonstration will show participants how to extend the life of their bicycle and improve safety through regular maintenance. Mark Dunn from Rediscover Cycling will share some tips and tricks to keep your bicycle on the road.

Mark will run through basic bike maintenance, focusing on the areas that see the most wear and tear, and tasks that need minimal tools and experience. He will run through information and jobs related to tubes and tyres, rim and disc brakes, chains and other basic adjustments and maintenance. A little goes a long way, so learn about quick and easy repairs that can make your bike last a long time.

  • 11.30am - Rediscovery Centre Tour

The Rediscovery Centre is offering free guided tours of Ireland’s National Centre for the Circular Economy. Visitors of all ages will learn the unique background of the Rediscovery Centre, the history of old Ballymun Boiler House, and the work that the Rediscovery Centre carries out for the benefit of the community, the circular economy and our planet. A visit to the ‘living laboratory’ will be an engaging experience taking visitors on a journey through understanding sustainability, biodiversity and community action. Encompassing the workshops, outdoor garden, educational features and much more, visitors are guaranteed to come away with a better understanding of environmental care, the circular economy and take away helpful tips for greener living.

  • 12pm - How to Build A Rainwater Planter

In the How to Build a Rainwater Planter demonstration, DCC’s Water Framework Directive Office’s John Stack will show you how to build your own rainwater planter to spruce up your back or front garden. You will be able to pepper him with questions about what to grow in your planter and how it helps you take climate action!

  • 1pm - Introduction to Furniture Upcycling

Join the Rediscovery Centre for a fun introduction to furniture upcyling. During this workshop, Marianne from Rediscover Furniture will teach participants how to pick the best furniture to upcycle, how to choose colours, how to prepare the furniture for painting and painting techniques.

The Introduction to Furniture Upcycling Workshop will start with how to prepare the furniture for upcycling and detail all the materials that are needed and where to source them. The techniques will include painting the furniture and achieving a beautiful spray-like finish. Decoupage using napkins and wallpaper will be demonstrated. Different options on revamping hardware will also be discussed.
