ADHD and the role of the Guidance Counsellor in schools
This one-hour webinar will offer guidance and reassurance to the parents and young people with ADHD, with a focus on how the school Guidance Counsellor can support the students academic, emotional, and social development. The session will include an overview of how the Guidance Counsellor works collaboratively with school staff, parents, and external supports, and how they can play a key role in areas such as subject choices, exam supports, and access to the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) process.
Key Areas Covered:
- The holistic role of the Guidance Counsellor in supporting neurodivergent students
- A brief overview of the training and CPD a guidance counsellor may have in this area
- One-to-one support, SPHE/wellbeing input, and collaboration with the wider school team
- Guidance Counsellors’ involvement in:
- Supporting transitions and subject choices
- Advising on reasonable accommodations for exams (RACE)
- Assisting with the DARE process — what documentation is needed, timelines, and how to prepare
- Communicating effectively with the school and advocating
- Signposting to additional supports and services (and how services can support each other)
- Q&A time to answer questions from parents and students
About Marie:
Marie Russell is a qualified Guidance Counsellor with over 17 years' experience in post-primary education. She holds a postgraduate qualification in School Guidance and Counselling, is a trained post-primary teacher, and has previously worked as a Home School Community Liaison, supporting families to access education and wellbeing services.
Marie has a strong interest in inclusive education, particularly in supporting neurodivergent students and those with additional needs. She also delivers parenting support programmes and works across both school and private settings to guide young people and families through educational and personal challenges.
As a parent of an 18-year-old who was diagnosed with ADHD during the Leaving Certificate cycle, Marie brings lived experience to her professional practice. She understands the realities of navigating school life with ADHD and is passionate about helping families access the supports and partnerships that can make a real difference.
