Description

Gaisce – The President’s Award is excited to announce a series of new pilot training dates in collaboration with Scouting Ireland.

Gaisce’s Adventure Journey Supervisor Training will outline all of the necessary approaches required to ensure the safety of Gaisce participants and that all requirements are met in practice during the Gaisce Adventure Journey.

The training workshop will cover:

  • Objectives & core elements of the Adventure Journey
  • Role of the Adventure Journey Supervisor
  • Planning & Preparing for the Adventure Journey
  • Safety & Risk Assessment, purpose and approach
  • Overseeing the Adventure Journey, working with others
  • Reviewing the Adventure Journey, assessment & reporting
  • Forms and “paper work”
  • Accommodation (hostels, serviced campsites, wild campsites)
  • Overnighting skills, including camping skills
  • Mode of travel specifics (initially for walking, later cycling & kayaking)
  • Journeying equipment, personal & group
  • Provisions, what to bring and how to use it
  • Hazards & mitigations, creating a specific risk assessment & plan
  • Leave No Trace, the relevant principles & how they might apply
  • Access, general principles & some specifics
  • Where to get help

The Adventure Journey is a central element of the Gaisce Award programme at all Award levels. The aim of the Adventure Journey is to inspire young people to develop a spirit of adventure and discovery by planning, training for, and completing an outdoor Adventure Journey as part of a team.

If you, or someone in your organisation, is interested in being the first to attend Gaisce’s Adventure Journey Supervisor Training, book your place now for €150 (including all booking fees) – please note that this fee is heavily subsidised by Gaisce – The President’s Award for these initial pilot dates. The fee includes one night’s accomodation (camping or hostel accomodation) and breakfast, lunch (x2) and dinner (x2) throughout your stay.
