About this event

This event, co-ordinated by aemi, will be made up of two distinct sessions for film artists: Arts Council Film Funding Clinic, and a discussion with writer, researcher and programmer Sarah Hayden on access and the moving image.

The event will be held online on YouTube Live from 10am – 12:30pm, and will include live captions.

Each session is free to attend, book in advance through Eventbrite to receive the link.

11:20am Sarah Hayden | Starting to think about Access and the Moving Image. A presentation by writer, researcher and programmer Sarah Hayden that considers: What does it mean, and what does it take, to make moving image more accessible? What purposes do captioning and audio description serve, and what possibilities do they open? Followed by Q&A with aemi co-directors Alice Butler & Daniel Fitzpatrick

Biography, Sarah Hayden

Sarah Hayden is a writer and Associate Professor of Literature and Visual Culture at the University of Southampton. Since 2019, she has held AHRC Innovation Fellowships to lead “Voices in the Gallery”: a four-year research, curating and commissioning project exploring intersections of voice, text, art and access. In 2021, she co-organised (with Hannah Wallis) the Caption-Conscious Ecology programme at Nottingham Contemporary. In 2022, she will be working on an audio description project with LUX, curating an exhibition of new work by Liza Sylvestre for John Hansard Gallery, and co-leading (together with Hannah Wallis) a new British Art Network “Art of Captioning’ Research Group. Sarah is the author of the monograph, Curious Disciplines: Mina Loy and Avant-Garde Artisthood, and co-author with Paul Hegarty, of Peter Roehr–Field Pulsations. Recent publications on include essays on Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa for LUX, Christopher Kulendran Thomas for Cultural Politics, Nancy Holt for Holt/Smithson Foundation, Jenny Brady for LUX, liquid voice and sensorial sovereignty for b2o: boundary2 online, and a trio of experimental lecture-poems on Teacher Voices in video for SpamPlaza. Sarah is currently writing a book on voice in art for University of Minnesota Press.
