Event description
Written and performed at Inis Oírr Lighthouse by Kevin Barry, with a sound design by Foley artist Jean McGrath and film by Louise Manifold.

About this Event

Early in the spring morning ... I’ll find myself, sometimes ... kind of becoming an absence to myself ... in a nice way ... and travelling ... travelling far across the fields of the sea.’

Long, long ago, a melancholy lighthouse keeper on Inis Oírr dreams of a different life and of distant lands ... and of a woman in Ennistymon.

Island Time is a multi-media monologue created by Kevin Barry for Aerial/Sparks as part of the Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture programme. With elements both of radio play and of digital theatre, Island Time sounds a tragi-comic tone and is primarily inspired by its unique location, the Inis Oírr lighthouse. Kindly supported by the Commissioners of Irish Lights.

Duration: 30 minutes

Groups: The lighthouse will accommodate a maximum of 3 people per 30 minute time slot to comply with physical distancing requirements.

Kevin Barry is the author of the novels Night Boat to Tangier, Beatlebone and City of Bohane, and the story collections Dark Lies the Island and There Are Little Kingdoms. His awards include the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, the Goldsmiths Prize, the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Prize and the Lannan Foundation Literary Award. His stories and essays appear in the New Yorker, Granta and elsewhere. He also works as a playwright and screenwriter, and he lives in County Sligo.

About Aerial/Sparks

Aerial/Sparks, created by artist Louise Manifold for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture, invites you to connect with one of the last unknown spaces on earth, the ocean wilderness.

The rugged beauty of Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands, is the setting for the Aerial/Sparks Art Trail from 11 - 27 September (Wednesday-Sunday). In addition to Kevin Barry's Island Time, created at Inis Oírr Lighthouse, six artists from across Europe have produced a series of compelling standalone artworks for exhibition and radio broadcast, inspired by their experiences of joining research expeditions on board the Marine Institute’s RV Celtic Explorer.

Visitors can easily traverse the island by foot to discover sound works housed in a lighthouse, the local church, an old handball alley, and Áras Éanna, Europe’s most westerly Arts Centre.

The Art Trail is free. Advance booking is only required for Island Time at Inis Oírr Lighthouse.

Participating artists: Ailís Ní Ríain (IRL), Carol Anne Connolly (IRL), David Stalling (DE), Kennedy Browne (IRL), Kevin Barry (IRL), Magz Hall (EN), Robertina Šebjanič (SI).
