About this Event

A “Positive Ageing Hub” will open at the Age Action shop on Camden Street for Positive Ageing Week. Speakers at Monday's event include:

11:00 - Karl Duff, Assistant Principal Officer, Department of Health

The Healthy and Positive Ageing initiative is a national three-year programme of research led by the Department of Health with the HSE and Age Friendly Ireland as key partners. The recently published policy statement Housing Options for our Ageing Population aims to encourage and facilitate timely planning by older people, and to rebalance the care model away from inappropriate residential and/or acute care, to supporting older people to remain living independently in their own homes and communities for longer.

11:30 - Sean Moynihan, CEO – ALONE

ALONE provides Housing with Support, Support Coordination, Befriending, BConnect training and technology, and Campaigns for Change to hundreds of older people every week, who are homeless, socially isolated, living in deprivation or in crisis. Alone provides secure, long-term tenancies and supports which enable independent living and offer security, comfort and their own front door to older people who need it. ALONE housing is assistive technology enabled and every tenant has a Support Coordinator who provides ongoing support to coordinate any services they may require.

12:00 - David Silke, Director of Research & Corporate Affairs, Housing Agency.

Housing is Key to Positive Ageing

The Housing Agency has produced a roadmap which provides a pathway towards the information required to make informed decisions about better design and to enable access in a structured and easily understood way, to the standards and guidance required to ensure that every person has a home that is appropriate to their needs.

12:30 – Eileen O’Callaghan, Regional Manager, Sage Advocacy

Planning ahead to age in place

The Assisted Decision-Making Act and what it means, planning ahead and the importance of making an Advanced Health Care Directive and Enduring Powers of Attorney, regardless of your age.

The right to have your voice heard and to participate in making decisions which affect you is a fundamental principle in a democratic society. It is a principle simply stated as "Nothing about you /without you". Sage Advocacy’s mission is to promote, protect and defend the rights and dignity of vulnerable adults, older people and healthcare patients. It operates in homes and communities and in all health and social care settings. In 2018 it dealt with over 3,000 calls for Information & Support and received over 1,000 referrals for Advocacy; much of it of a complex and challenging nature.
