About this event

In the fourth AkiDwA@20 Masterclass , Dr. Ronit Lenitn will delve into the topics of race, racism and denial in contemporary Ireland.

Who is the speaker?

Dr. Ronit Lentin is an Israeli-Irish sociologist and writer of fiction and non-fiction books. Dr. Lentin's areas of research expertise focus on Racism and Immigration in Ireland , the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, gender and genocide/violence and feminism.

Dr. Lentin was born in Haifa, Mandatory Palestine, in 1944 and she has lived in Ireland since 1969. She was an associate professor of sociology in Trinity College Dublin until her retirement in 2014. From 1997 until 2012 Dr. Lentin was the director of the MPhil in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict, Department of Sociology. She was head of the Department of Sociology and founding member of the Trinity Immigration Initiative at Trinity College Dublin.

Some of Dr. Lentin's published works include Racism and Anti-Racism in Ireland ( 2002), Women's Movement: Migrant Women Transforming Ireland (2002), After Optimism? Ireland, Racism and Globalisation (2006), Race and State (2006) and Migrant Activism and Integration from Below in Ireland (2013).

Who is the facilitator?

Most Africans living in Ireland must have met Tina one-way or the other. Tina is a Nigerian residing in Ireland for over 24 years. Tina is one of the founding members of AkiDwa, she was a Chairperson and one of the founding executive members of AkiDwa.

Tina is a Project manager, Qualified Financial Accountant with a degree in Economics and statistics from University of Benin, Benin city, Nigeria and Management from Dublin City University, School of Business. She has worked in the International Financial Services centre with several leading Investment banks in Ireland since 2004 to date.

Tina has written for various magazines both in Ireland and abroad, the magazines she wrote for in Ireland were Xclusive Magazine and Heritage magazine where she gave her expertise advice on beauty tips, fashion and style.

Tina is the founder and chairperson of “Miss Africa Ireland beauty/fashion Show” organised since the year 2000 on the platform of Tritees Promotions and also organises Ankara Carnival Ireland to promote the beauty of the African prints called “Ankara”.

Tina is a community leader, was the Secretary of National Council of Nigerians in Ireland (NCNI), the Vice President of Nigerian Community Ireland (NCI) Dublin and currently the Secretary of Osun Descendants Union Ireland, General Secretary, Ooduduwa Progressive Union Ireland and General Secretary, Yoruba One Voice Ireland

Established in Dublin in 2001, AkiDwA has been representing migrant women in Ireland for almost two decades by providing policymakers with the unique perspective of a migrant-led national women’s organisation. AkiDwA takes a holistic approach to integration that involves promoting both a migrant and a gender-specific approach to public services and by encouraging migrant women to access mainstream services and initiatives. We promote equality and justice for all migrant women in Ireland by ensuring equal opportunities and equal access to resources for all.
