Get the inside track on Gerald Barry's 'Alice’s Adventures Under Ground' with Irish National Opera.

About this event

Did you know… Alice’s Adventures Under Ground has a cast of just seven singers, but they perform 53 roles, involving 76 costume changes, all in just 54 and a half minutes? Only Alice remains Alice all the way through.

Join us for Alice’s Adventures Under Ground in Focus, an introduction to Gerald Barry’s energetic and exciting new opera based on the texts of Lewis Carroll. This one hour online introduction will be delivered by Andrew Gavin who will take a deeper look at the opera, exploring the music and the context in which it was created.

This event is designed to give a deeper understanding of Gerald Barry’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and serves as the perfect accompaniment to the filmed release of the opera which is available via On Jam from 5 November. However, it is equally of value to those with a more general interest in musical and cultural history.

The event will last for approximately 1 hour and will be available to access online.

Access details will be provided on the day of the event via email.

Organiser Irish National Opera

Organiser of Alice's Adventures Under Ground...In Focus

Irish National Opera is Ireland’s newest opera company. It champions Irish creativity in its casting, its choice of creative teams and in its commitment to the presentation of new operas.

The company has performed large-scale productions of works from the great operatic canon by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Rossini in the Gaiety and Bord Gáis Energy theatres in Dublin, the National Opera House in Wexford and Cork Opera House. It has also taken touring productions of works by Thomas Adès, Offenbach, Gluck and Vivaldi — the first ever production of a Vivaldi opera in Ireland — to venues in all parts of the country.

INO was formed in January 2018 through the merger of two award-winning companies, Opera Theatre Company and Wide Open Opera. The two companies joined force in 2017 in response to an Arts Council initiative, and have delivered Ireland its first ever truly national opera company. In its first 24 months of operation Irish National Opera produced 72 performances of 14 different operas in 24 Irish venues, and its long-term target is to visit over 20 Irish venues annually.

Irish National Opera is principally funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon
