Event description
‘Alternating Current’ is Dublin’s new city festival, curated by Dublin Digital Radio, to show Ireland’s other music traditions.

About this event

The festival will feature new radio specific work broadcast on Dublin Digital Radio from Tuesday October 26 and intimate performances in The Complex’s Gallery Space over the Hallowe’en weekend (October 30 and 31), along with some late night dancing at a venue close to the city centre on Saturday October 30.

This October Dublin Digital Radio celebrates its fifth year broadcasting. In that time it has come to occupy a unique position in Ireland’s music hinterland. As a radio platform that thrives on giving space to experimenters, artists and producers, the station has become a home to some of the most compelling work being made both in Ireland and by its emigre axis.

Alternating Current is our attempt to curate some of this magic into a new city music festival. AC is an expression of what happens when scenes coalesce, overlap, and support one another.

Our inaugural festival is a celebration of the networks that converge on ddr., an ode to the airwaves as a space of commune and solidarity during crisis, while also being a response by the station to a wide range of artists that are each exhaustive experimenters in their own right.

We commissioned sixteen of these artists to make new work and we are delighted to have them perform it over the duration of the festival.

From Tuesday October 26 to Friday October 29, Dublin Digital Radio will premier five new sound and radioworks specially commissioned by the station for Alternating Current.

Then on Saturday October 30 and Sunday October 31, a series of 4 concerts will take place in the beautiful surroundings of The Gallery in The Complex on Mary Abbey Street in Smithfield featuring new work specifically commissioned by Dublin Digital Radio for the festival.

Jenn is the founder and director of the Swansea Laptop Orchestra and a founding member of the Dublin Laptop Orchestra. She is the president of the Irish Sound, Science and Technology Association and a lecturer in music at Goldsmiths.

Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh

Ailbhe Nic Oireactaigh is an Irish viola player living in Glasgow. She grew up playing classical music but became increasingly interested in improvisation and undertook a degree in jazz performance. After graduating, her focus shifted to early music and a deeper interest in exploring the tonal possibilities of gut strings in both amplified and acoustic contexts, some fruits of which can be heard on her solo recordings Oreing (Fort Evil Fruit 2017) and The Rounds (KRUT 2021).

Dan Walsh/Fixity

‘At Alternating Current Fixity will premiere a suite of new music composed throughout 2020/early 2021, drawing from a number of recent solo releases and reaching towards new group explorations.'

FIXITY is an experimental music group led by Composer/Drummer Dan Walsh who is from Cork, Ireland. The tunes are explored in collective improvisation with a fluid cast of musicians from various fields of intrigue.

SInce June 2016 Fixity has recorded consistently with Tenor Saxophonist Emil Nerstrand including a Double LP on Penske Recordings in December 2016 entitled "The Things In The Room", also featuring Guitarist Nils Andersson and Fredrik Persson which was recorded in a single evening at the historic Tambourine Studios in Malmo, Sweden.

Since the release of "The Things In The Room" Fixity has released 2 Live EPs recorded in Cork and Malmö and has performed in Sweden and throughout Ireland with a cast of unique improvisers, continuing to expand on questions of the impossibility of stillness and repetition with an increasing network of collaborators and their welcome voices.

Fixity's second LP on Penske Recordings was released in 2019. Entitled "No Man Can Tell", the LP features original photogram artwork by artist Kate Bowe O'Brien, was produced with the Altered Hours’ Patrick Cullen and features an extended ensemble of Irish and International musicians collectively interpreting Walsh’s compositions by characteristically ambitious and future-focused means.

Alongside these larger scaled releases, Walsh has been producing a series of self titled and numbered solo recordings since 2015 that represent a catalogue of new compositions and personal explorations. The most recent of these recordings is FIXITY 6 which was released August 17th 2020.
