Event Information
Description
APZ Tone Tomšič is one of just two choirs worldwide to have won the prestigious European Grand Prix twice, in 2002 and 2008. Last year they qualified once again and in August will try to win the Grand Prix for an historic and unprecedented third time. APZ Tone Tomšič is well known in Ireland as well, since one of their greatest achievements was winning First Prize at the 2011 the Cork International Choral Festival. The visit to Dublin is part of the choir's last tour before attending the Grand Prix Final in Arezzo, Italy, in August.
Under conductor Sebastjan Vrhovnik, APZ Tone Tomšič's Dublin programme will include works which they will perform at the European Grand Prix Final, contemporary choral pieces and some of the best arrangements of Slovenian folk songs.
New Dublin Voices will perform a selction of contemporary Irish choral pieces coupled with
early gems by Monteverdi and Victoria.
APZ Tone Tomšič is from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and is one of the best amateur choirs in the world. Since its beginnings in 1926 APZ Tone Tomšič has been a guiding force in Slovenian choral singing, not only in performance and technique but also in programming. The choir’s repertoire includes works from all musical periods, while special attention is paid to modern choral music. Through commissions and competitions, APZ encourages Slovenian composers, both young and established, and gives firs performances of their pieces to help further the recognition of Slovenian choral music both at home and around the world. The choir performs all over Slovenia, participates in vocal-instrumental projects, records pieces for Slovenian National Radio (RTV Slovenija), archives and organises educational seminars for choral conductors (with mentors Peter Hanke, Jesper Grove Jørgensen, Denmark and Ragnar Rasmussen, Norway).
