Event description

Description

You are invited to the second session of the Arboreal Book Club at Greywood Arts on the 12th of September 2018, facilitated by visual artist Carol Anne Connolly.

We will be discussing the book "Ireland's Trees: Myths, Legends and Folklore" By Niall Mac Coitir.

"Ireland was once so heavily wooded it was said a squirrel could travel from Cork to Killarney without touching the ground. Many myths and legends and much folklore associated with native Irish trees persist to this day and they are gathered together in this book. Two main themes emerge: the tree as a marker of important places such as royal sites or holy wells, and the role of trees as sources of magical power in folk customs and superstitions. Many themes are common to different trees, such as fertility and magical power. Early Irish poetry is littered with references to trees and this book contains examples. In conclusion, the letters of the Ogham alphabet are named after trees and the link is described."

All welcome.
