Event description
‘Art and Architecture of the Great Northern Railway’ Lecture by Siobhan Osgood

About this Event

Upon its creation in 1876 the Great Northern Railway of Ireland inherited a myriad of architectural styles and structures, from the Romaneqsue stations of George Papworth at Balbriggan and Kells, to the Gothic ecclesiastical expressions by William Murray at Cootehill and Monaghan Road, the company was in need of a new visual identity. This presentation follows the architectural journey pioneered by the GNR’s first engineer in chief, William Hemingway Mills, and his creation of polychromatic brick-branding. Siobhan Osgood is an Irish Research Council funded scholar, researching the architecture of the former Great Northern Railway (Ireland) for her PhD at Trinity College Dublin. She has given numerous guest lectures and publications include Architecture Ireland, the AIA Journal, Irish Railway Record Society Journal, and heritage videos with Irish Rail.
