Event description

Description

An exclusive day devoted to studying the Cobbe Collection of Old Masters and Family Portraits uniquely preserved in their original setting at Newbridge House. The collection grew from the 1760s with significant guidance from the collector and author of The Gentleman's and Connoisseur's Dictionary of Painters, (1769), Rev. Matthew Pilkington and is housed in the purpose-built gallery, the Red Drawing Room, built in 1765 by George Semple to display the growing collection. Dating back centuries, and across many genres the collection contains works by many Italian masters like Guercino and Strozzi, and from the northern schools of Mommers, Begeyn, van der Velde and many more. In addition to the Old Masters, there are the many family portraits throughout the house, from Irish and British artists, like Latham, Astley and Hunter. The day will attempt to explore the collecting tastes of the Cobbe family while examining and appreciating the many artworks that make up this valuable and rare collection.

Tickets include: Talk, Refreshments, Special access tour and Lunch. €60
