Event description
Inspirational ways to activate ourselves and our communities to face ecological and social challenges of today.

About this Event

Activating participation is an essential craft, and in November 2019 independent curator Orlaith Treacy and Butler Gallery host Encounters UK to deliver a three day course in The Art of Invitation. The Art of Invitation shares a deep and broad range of approaches and experiences to ignite the collective imagination and create the possibilities for change. Guided by the work of environmental activist and author Joanna Macy, Encounters’ UK explore ‘what’s it like to live now?’ grounding their work squarely in the realities of our current ecological crises and the challenges of working collectively to mend our damaged relationship to the natural world. Encounters draw upon their own creative practices and experiences of engaging people and communities, each having worked for many years in the arts.

Following a three day course at Butler Gallery, this public discussion will put the knowledge that has been gained into practice, drawing people together to make future plans and actions, share knowledge and skills and find collaborative ways to come together.

This will be an assembly, a gathering together of those who want to find creative and active ways to make change. Encounters associates Ruth Ben-Tovim, Lucy Neal and Anne-Marie Culhane will discuss their personal creative practices, how and why Culture Declares an Emergency movement was developed in the UK, and it will open up a number of pertinent questions that will be collectively discussed such as: how can culture create the ground for building skills, connections, networks and the relationships that we will need?
