In association with TG4, Arts in Action presents the 2018 Gradam Ceol ‘Young Musician of the Year’, Glaswegian Fiddle Player Clare Friel with sisters, Anne & Sheila.

The Friel Sisters were born to parents from The Rosses in the Donegal Gaeltacht and now reside in Glasgow. These young women represent a new wave of second generation of Irish immigrants who draw directly from the musical and geographical heritage of their parent’s home place. As siblings, they achieve a close blend on the fiddle, flute and uilleann pipes, their tunes interspersed with songs sang in unison, many of which have been passed down through the family repertoire and that of their locality in Donegal.

Since the launch of their debut album, they have performed in various venues and festivals across Europe, America and Asia and have appeared as guests on stage with acts such as Altan, The Chieftains, Lúnasa, Sharon Shannon, The Máirtín O’Connor Trio, Cherish the Ladies, Solas and Fidil. In 2016, the girls performed at Festival Interceltique de Lorient, and won the prestigious ‘Trophée Loïc Raison’.Their latest album ‘Before the Sun’ with Hajime Takahashi and Cathal Ó Curráin, was produced by Ciarán Ó Maonaigh and recorded by Jack Talty.
