About this Event

This workshop is aimed at lecturers and other staff involved in the assessment process. Its objective is to promote a positive awareness of wellbeing and the importance of looking after one’s self in the context of assessment, which often creates anxiety and stress for both lecturers and students.

Attendees will delve into some of the common assessment factors that negatively impact on student and lecturer wellbeing, including - but not limited to - scheduling, scope, assessment types, assessment (over)load, plagiarism, assessment instructions and provision of feedback.

Attendees will explore how these factors can be mitigated through the utilisation of universal design for assessment principles, academic integrity principles and technology-enhanced assessment approaches.

Practical approaches and strategies for maintaining one’s own wellbeing in the context of assessment stress will be explored. Similarly, approaches and strategies for assisting students through stressful assessment issues will also be explored.

Lastly, attendees will create a personal action plan to embed these positive wellbeing strategies and approaches in their own assessment practices.

The workshop will be roughly divided into four parts:

  1. An overview of stress and anxiety and the impact on wellbeing: causes, triggers, effects
  2. Students' issues around assessment and how we can help distressed students (DCU Counselling Service)
  3. Approaches to assessment design and management to mitigate stress and anxiety (Teaching Enhancement Unit)
  4. Personal action planning

Portions of the workshop speakers' presentations will be recorded and photographs will be taken throughout the day also. Reuseable learning objects will be created from the presentations and other resources distilling the discussions from the day will be developed and made available publicly under a Creative Commons licence afterwards.
