Assessment Symposium: Challenges and Enablers of Change

Speakers include Professor Tony Harland* Head of Department, Higher Education Development Centre, University of Otago, New Zealand

The Assessment OF/FOR/AS Learning Enhancement Theme (2016-2018) set out to answer the question: ‘How do we enable significant changes to assessment practices and polices’? This Assessment Symposium explores some of the challenges and enablers identified in the Enhancement Theme. It will present and allow time for some discussion around those that emerged, such as:

assessment load and slow time in assessment; programme approaches to enable more integrative learning; exploring grading issues (Assessment OF Learning); developing students as partners (Assessment AS Learning); other themes, including work-based assessment and principles of assessment.

The speakers will be drawn from those involved in the assessment project, including

  • Professor Tony Harland (University of Otago, New Zealand) Assessment Arms Race: Slow scholarship and overassessment
  • Dr Terry Maguire (IT Tallaght & The National Forum): Grading Issues. Looking at assessment through Maths Eyes
  • Dr Colm Cunnifffe (University of Limerick) Work-based Assessment. Cooperative Education Manager, Science and Engineering
  • Associate Professor Geraldine O’Neill (The National Forum) Programme Approaches to Assessment: developing more integrative assessment approaches.
  • Dr Roisin Donnelly (The National Forum). Professional Development and Assessment. Project Manager for the Pilot Study of the Emerging National Professional Development (PD) Framework.
  • Oisín Hassan (USI) will represent the student voice in the discussions throughout the day.

The Symposium will draw on the some of the Assessment Theme outputs, including:
