How might Family Care approaches be adapted for Autistic Adults?
“Autism-Informed Care”
As more children are being diagnosed as autistic, many adults are also realising that being autistic may make a lot of sense of their life experiences and struggles, & may seek diagnosis themselves.
Autistic people (especially growing up without knowledge of being autistic) may have different sensory needs, communications styles, friendship preferences than most people, and are very vulnerable to Social Anxiety, Depression, Low Self-Esteem etc. In providing for their care needs, allowance needs to be made for their autistic personality & perspective.
This webinar/workshop will explore
• the growing importance of the Neurodiversity perspective
• autistic differences in social information-processing
• realistic life goals, & other relevant issues
Workshop structure
• Presentation on current thinking about Autism.
• Discussion around participants’ current experience, concerns & ideas in this area.
• Possible implications for care approaches.
Learning objectives
• Increased awareness and comfort with this important area of client diversity.
• Greater familiarity with learning resources in this area.

I'm a therapist & trainer who has worked in the areas of Disability, Counselling/Psychotherapy, Addiction, & Mental Health for over 30 years, specialising in an individualised, pragmatic approach to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I was particularly active in the field of Behavioural Addictions for a number of years, as well as working at a senior level in counselling/psychotherapy education, & received the Irish Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy Carl Berkeley Award in 2010.
My work is currently focused on understanding the problems faced by autistic adults, & their specific therapeutic needs.
I'm autistic myself, having made the discovery nearly 10 years ago
