Event description

Description

Coinciding with the Global Day of Action on Women's Health, Abortion Rights Campaign will host Reproductive Justice Walking Tours on Sunday 28th May 2017. This is a tour experience with a difference that cannot be missed.

Our activist tour guides will take you along the backstreets of Dublin city to reveal hidden health histories, forgotten feminist heroines and underground pro-choice networks that make up the broad membership of the reproductive justice movement. At each tour stop, a different performer will illuminate the tour through speech, spoken word, poetry and other art forms.

Booking is essential. All participants must register on arrival at the tour starting points and wear an armband provided for the duration of your tour. Please see below for more details about the tour experience and ticketing.

Tour Details:

This experience involves two different tours: The Northside Tour and The Southside Tour. Each tour takes approx 90 minutes so participants are asked to bring good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. You may book both tours or just one. They can be booked in any order. There will be 3 stops in each tour with bathroom facilities at the second stop of both. The route is fully wheelchair and buggy accessible. We ask tour participants to leave your bicycles behind rather than walk with them alongside for safety reasons.

Northside Tours depart from ArtBox on James Joyce St at 12pm and 12.30pm and conclude by the Rosie Hackett Bridge. Southside Tours depart from The Long Stone Pub on Townsend St at 2.30pm and 3pm and conclude by City Hall.

"Presenting Mamie Cadden, Dublin's most infamous abortionist of the 30's, 40's and 50's. Is she an exploiter of the vulnerable and desperate? Or a savvy and rebellious businesswoman in a male-dominated Irish Free State."

In line with our backstreet theme, following completion of the tours at 6pm Idir Mnå will present a special staged reading of 'Our Lady of Last Resort', a compelling potrayal of Irish backstreet abortionist Mamie Cadden. This will take place upstairs in The Stags Head at 1 Dame Court. Please note that this venue is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible however an audio recording of the live performance on disc can be provided.

We will document the days events using photography, audio and video for sharing across our online platforms. If you do not wish to feature in our documentation, please let your tour guide know on arrival prior to the commencement of the tour.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of ArtBox, The Long Stone Pub, The Stags Head, Idir Mnå and Voices for Choice in the production of this walking tour.

5. You say you will take us down backstreets. Will I and my belongings be safe on this tour?

Some of the areas we will walk through may feel desolate or run down however we don't believe the pose any more risk than the typical city street.

Participants are advised to stay with the tour group and make the usual precautions when walking in the city centre eg. don't keep your valuables on display, watch where you walk, monitor your children at all time etc.

If you have a medical condition or specific health needs you want to make us aware of, please notify us of this in advance by email at info@abortionrights.ie so we can accommodate you to the best of our ability.

11. Will a tour be cancelled if it rains?

Rain doesn't stop us marching year in, year out and campaigning for free, safe, legal and accessible abortion for those who need it. Unless there is an actual torrential storm or flash blizzard (inwhich case everyone will be reimbursed in full), these tours will go on! It's Ireland: just pack a raincoat, umbrella and a good spare pair of socks :)
