Description

Opening Night Guest Speakers: Manchán Magan

Manchán Magan:

He has written books on his travels in Africa, India and South America and two novels. He writes occasionally for The Irish Times, reports on travel for various radio programmes, and has presented dozens of documentaries on issues of world culture for TG4, RTÉ & Travel Channel. He lives in his oak forest in a self-made hovel in Westmeath.

Manchán will discuss his travels around Africa and South America as well as exploring Irish culture and heritage with a global perspective.

1. Talk Summary: Confessions of a deluded traveller – Manchán’s experiences in Africa, India and South America. Manchán Magan, writer and broadcaster, tells stories from twenty years of travelling the world, including: his years running an organic farm/hostel on the Ecuador/Peru border when both countries were at war; his time as a hermit in a cowshed in the Himalayas; getting rabies in the Amazon; being medical supervisor at an Indian leper station; working in a cannabis commune in Canada; going without food for a week in the Congo; living on a remote primal screaming commune in Columbia; driving for 6-months overland across Africa, and filming with remote tribes in Africa, China, India, South America and Greenland for TG4 and the Travel Channel International.

2. Talk Summary: Sustainable ecotourism in Ireland – a global perspective. The talk explores the most innovative and alluring eco-tourism ventures Manchán has experienced in Africa, Cuba, South America and Asia. He also offers glimpses of an alternative model for Ireland, in which ecotourism would play a central role – looking at community-supported farms and bakeries, woodlands for timber and flood prevention, enlightening ways of caring for the elderly and excluded in community farms with Mens Sheds and childcare. He talks about his own homestead with pigs roaming his forest, bee hives, rare fruit & nut species, polytunnel and self-built eco-house.
