Universal Basic Income: Strengthening workers rights - constructive dialogue with the labour movement in Ireland
About this event
Basic Income Ireland invites you to attend our online seminar on the evening of Thursday, June 17th 2021 at 6pm.
The purpose of this seminar is to start a meaningful conversation with the Irish labour movement about a Universal Basic Income (UBI) in Ireland.
At present, a basic income is being proposed for the artistic community and the Programme for Government has a commitment to pilot a UBI. There is some scepticism towards UBI from some in the labour movement. During this seminar we will discuss the main reasons for this scepticism and how this can be addressed. We will also talk about how best to raise awareness about the benefits of UBI amongst this sector more generally.
To help us achieve these aims, the seminar will feature three guest speakers with strong ties to the labour movement:
• Guy Standing, co-founder of BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network) and formerly with ILO (International Labour Organisation)
• Tom McDonnell, Economist with NERI (The Nevin Economic Research Institute)
• Michael Taft, Researcher for SIPTU (Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union, Ireland’s largest trade union)
