Description

Bath Night on Henrietta Street

-Bathnight on Henrietta Street takes place on the 24th of July, 1969? An important date
in the Armstrong household. Why?

- Is it because Neil Armstrong is going to be landing
on the moon. The Armstrongs are distantly related -
least that’s what Old Ma Armstrong says and they’ll
be famous?

- No!

- Is it because Eucemius Leary has his eye on
Bridgid Armstrong and he’s going to ask her out on
a first date? (They will eventually get married)

- No!

- Is it because Bridgid Armstrong is going to wear a miniskirt for the first time?

- No!

- Well what then?!

-It's Bathnight on Henrietta Street of course. That's as big as man landing on the moon,
any day! There's the water, that has to be lugged up the four flights of stairs, then heated
the old way, over the stove. Then there's the tin bath and the red soap that'll make their
hair shine and have them sparkling for Mass in the morning. And don't whatever you do
throw the water out. There's the whole family to be bathed and the clothes to be soaked.
And then only then, if there's enough money in the meter, there might be a bag of chips
and an hour in front of the telly, rabbit ears and all.

Carnation Theatre's latest play is a reminiscence on 'the old way'. It is packed full of
back combing and beano comics, Mary Quant and Mini Skirts and a grand sing along. All the old favourites! Not to mention a real live bath!
