Description

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with almost €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020). Operating under Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge 2, the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking is a new €3.7 billion Public-Private Partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium. A strong European bio-based industrial sector has potential to significantly reduce Europe’s dependency on fossil-based products, help the EU meet climate change targets, and lead to greener and more environmentally friendly growth. The key is to develop new biorefining technologies to sustainably transform renewable natural resources into bio-based products, materials, chemicals and fuels. The EU has the industrial, research and renewable resources potential. It is now a matter of deploying it in a sustainable manner to compete in the global bioeconomy race.

Horizon 2020 is of strategic importance to the governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland so in recognition of the need to promote the Bio-Based Industries Public Private Partnership, InterTradeIreland, the Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs Northern Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Food & Marine Ireland and University College Dublin have partnered to hold an all-island networking and information event on the 2017 Call for Proposals from the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking.
