Event Details

Bloomsday, 16 June, marks the day in 1904 which is depicted in the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. The book follows the life of the main character, Leopold Bloom, and others as they pass the day, from early morning until late at night. The day is marked around the world to celebrate the novel and the broader work of James Joyce. This year, the Consulate General of Ireland, the Irish Chamber of Commerce, and the Hong Kong International Literary Festival are delighted to join in the global Bloomsday celebration by bringing cartoonist and illustrator Robert Berry to Hong Kong. Mr Berry has adapted a number of Joyce's works, including the creation of a digital graphic version of Ulysses, Ulysses Seen (ulyssesseen.com). Most recently, he has collaborated with the Dublin-based James Joyce Centre and Stoney Road Press to create a special print edition of The Dead.

We would like to invite you to take part in this celebration of Bloomsday with us. Mr Berry will give a talk on adapting Joyce's work for comics and illustration and present an exhibition of his drawings for Joyce’s The Dead. Friends will then join Mr Berry to give readings and music from Joyce's Ulysses. 19.00pm – Reception and Exhibition of drawings from The Dead 20.00pm – Talk by Mr Robert Berry, followed by readings and music from Ulysses
