Event description

Description

Irish author and scientist, Ian Hughes will be in the gallery to talk about his forthcoming book Disordered Minds: How Dangerous Personalities Are Destroying Democracy. He will also be signing copies (we’ll have books for sale in our shop). By bringing together his experience in science, psychology and political science he will be able to answer questions on why a small proportion of people with dangerous personality disorders are responsible for much of the violence and greed that scars our world. Clinical psychologist Paul D'Alton will introduce Ian on the night. Paul head of the Department of Psycho-oncology at St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin and Adjunct Lecturer at The School of Psychology, University College Dublin.

Ian Hughes is a scientist, psychologist and author. He graduated with a PhD in atomic physics from Queen’s University in Belfast, and worked in some of the top research laboratories in Europe and the United States. These included JET, the world’s largest nuclear fusion machine, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States. In mid-career he trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, where he learned about human development - and the absence of development which results in dangerous personality disorders. You can find more information about the book at www.disorderedworld.com

Reviews:

Ian Hughes’ book Disordered Minds is essential reading in the era of Donald Trump. ~ Jeffrey Sachs, Columbia University

Ian Hughes adds new scientific insight to one of the deepest conundrums of politics: that positions of power appeal to the narcissistic, paranoid psychopaths among us, with catastrophic results for humanity. ~ Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and the author of The Better Angels of Our Nature and Enlightenment Now.

Read this exceptionally fine and accessible work of scholarship and make it your business to keep these disordered minds from disordering our universe. - Mary McAleese, Former President of Ireland
