Event Details

The IGPS is delighted to announce the publication and Irish launch of Seamus O'Brien's new book on the plant hunter Joseph Dalton Hooker. Hooker ranks as one of the greatest plant hunters of his time. Between 1849 and 1850 Hooker explored the Himalaya of eastern Nepal and north eastern India where he collected seed and sent it back to Kew. Some of these seeds found their way to Glasnevin, and thus to NBG Kilmacurragh.

Seamus, an IGPS member, is Head Gardener of the National Botanic Gardens at NBG Kilmacurragh and this book retraces the route Joseph Hooker took in the Kingdom of Sikkim in NE India. Superbly written, its chapters intertwine these recent expeditions and Hooker's journey in 1849.

The book contains over 500 coloured images and 60 black and whites. A must have for any gardener or someone interested in the story of Hooker and Kilmacurragh as many of the rhododendrons growing there today are from seed first collected by Hooker on his travels in this part of the Himalaya. In the Footsteps of Joseph Dalton Hooker would also make an ideal Christmas present. Facilites on our booking site allow you to purchase extra books at the pre launch prices listed below.

The book will be launched by Patricia Butler, noted author and curator. Patricia has written a number of books relating to botanical subjects including Irish Botanical Illustrators & Flower Painters. Currently she is guest curator at the National Gallery of Ireland where she is helping to organise an exhibition relating to the history of Irish Botanical Illustration and Flower Painting(drawn from nature). Seamus will speak after Patricia to give you a flavour of his new book.

Pre-ordered books can be collected afterwards in the reception area of the visitors centre. Please join us in the Teak House (the glasshouse nearest the car park) where complimentary refreshments will be served. There will be an opportunity then to chat to Seamus and catch up with other gardening enthusiasts.

This is an event not to be missed and early booking is very strongly advised as there is much excitement about this publication. Places are limited.

The Irish Garden Plant Society is a group of enthusiastic gardeners with a special love for Irish plants. We are passionate about researching, finding and propagating Irish plants to ensure their survival. We research Irish gardens and garden history. We actively promote Irish horticulture with recognition for our exhibits at major international shows, including Chelsea. We enjoy Irish gardens through regular talks, lectures, workshops and visits to gardens. We publish a Newsletter three times a year and a journal every few years.

The Society has members throughout the island of Ireland and is divided into three regions: Northern, Leinster and Munster. In Leinster we hold our lectures during the Winter at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin and we organise visits to gardens, many of which are private, in the Eastern region.Members are very welcome to attend lectures or visit gardens in any region.

In addition we maintain close links with other gardens societies such as The Irish Society of Botanical Artists, Plant Heritage, the Alpine Garden Society, the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland and the Royal Horticultural Society.
