Description

Join RIAM Director Deborah Kelleher for a series of 6 lectures on the origins and development of the ultimate instrument, the orchestra. The journey begins with the motley band of the Baroque era, through the birth of the modern orchestra in the Age of Enlightenment and finishes in the altered musical landscape of the present day.

Week 1: Baroque beginnings

Week 2: An army of generals: The Mannheim School

Week 3: Gilding the classical lily: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven

Week 4: An explosion of colour: The Romantics

Week 5: Modernism: an orchestra with a twist

Week 6: Whither the orchestra? A view from the podium

Coffee/tea and sweet treats served from 10.30am, lecture from 11am to 12.15
