About this event

Join us for a wonderful session of poetry and commentary featuring ‘The Heavy Bear Who Goes with Me: 100 classic poems with Commentary’ by Brendan Kennelly and Neil Astley. The panellists John McAuliffe, Victoria Kennefick and Neil Astley will discuss the new book and the poems, with time for questions and comments from the audience.

John McAuliffe grew up in Listowel, Co Kerry and now lives in Manchester where he is Professor of Poetry at the University of Manchester and Associate Publisher at the independent poetry press, Carcanet. John McAuliffe has published six books with The Gallery Press, most recently ‘Selected Poems’ (2021), which was an Observer Book of the Year, and ‘The Kabul Olympics’, which was a Guardian Poetry Book of the Month in June 2020 and a TLS and Irish Times 2020 Book of the Year.

Victoria Kennefick is a poet, writer and teacher from Co Cork now based in Co Kerry. Her first collection, ‘Eat or We Both Starve’, published by Carcanet Press, was shortlisted for the T.S. Victoria has been shortlisted for the Dalkey Book Festival Emerging Writer of the Year 2022.

Neil Astley is editor of Bloodaxe Books, which he founded in 1978. His books include novels, poetry collections and anthologies, most notably those in Bloodaxe’s Staying Alive anthology series: ‘Staying Alive’ (2002), ‘Being Alive’ (2004), ‘Being Human’ (20121) and ‘Staying Human’ (2020), a Poetry Book Society Special Commendation.
