Event description

Description

Thought by many to be John McDwyer’s finest play, Callaghan’s Place has been the subject of two national tours, as well as playing a sold out week in London, since it was premiered by Beezneez in 2003. It has been performed extensively by amateur companies the length and breadth of Ireland.

Following the hugely successful revival of Lovely Leitrim, many receiving theatres have requested the revival of the second part of McDwyer’s Leitrim Trilogy, Callaghan’s Place and the company are reacting to those requests with a touring production in July and November 2018.

In Callaghan’s Place, Paul and Mary Dolan struggle to come to terms with the upcoming departure of their only child to study at university. A mysterious Englishman arrives in their midst and his blossoming friendship with the daughter creates the background to tragedy as neighbours, Pat Kelly and Annie Jackson, themselves custodians of great regret and sorrow, fail to stem the tide of Paul’s suspicion and anger. For all the seriousness of the underlying themes, Callaghan’s Place is peppered with scenes of outrageous humour.
