CESCA Annual Equality Day

About this event

On our last Equality Day in 2020 we focused on the theme of Equality in a time of Covid. From our fantastic speakers including Senator Lynn Ruane, Dr. Sean Healy of Social Justice Ireland, Professor Kathleen Lynch of UCD and Paul Ginnell from EAPN Ireland, the emerging theme was that the Covid-19 pandemic was not the great leveller it was originally thought to be, instead it was leading to worsening inequalities. At the time we concluded that a new normal was needed that focused on addressing inequalities and that a strong and sustainable community and voluntary sector was vital in order to achieve this.

A year on from this discussion and despite all the gains we have made in tackling Covid-19, we are again facing growing inequalities, increasing pressures on the community and voluntary sector and growing concerns about mental health and health inequalities.

On this year’s Equality Day, we want to pause for a moment and focus on community. On the collective effort of communities and the community sector in supporting the most marginalised members of society over these past two years. To hear what that support has meant and to consider how we can ensure our communities and community sector are recognised and emboldened to address social injustices and tackling the inequalities that we know exist as we emerge from Covid 19.

We want this morning to not only be an examination of the inequalities that the pandemic has highlighted but also a way of capturing and celebrating what communities can do when they work together to support each other to achieve change and greater equality.
