About this Event

The Great Edward Hincks

This illustrated talk will focus on the extraordinary scholar that was Edward Hincks, and consider the vital contribution that he made to the decipherment of cuneiform writing, an achievement for which he has never really received sufficient acknowledgement. The speaker, a cuneiform specialist from the British Museum in London, will explain why this heroic product of Trinity College, Dublin should be lauded by the United Nations and celebrated on postage stamps and fridge magnets.

Irving Finkel was born in 1951 and has been a cuneiform tablet curator in the British Museum in London since 1979. He is especially interested in ancient ideas, magic and medicine, and also specialises in the history of the world’s board games. As well as writing professionally he also publishes fiction for adults and children, and is an inveterate collector. He is the founder of the Great Diary Project, which rescues unwanted private diaries. Dr Finkel has done a good deal of radio and television broadcasting, lives in London with his wife Joanna, and has five children. He is the author of the successful work The Ark Before Noah.
