Your Regional Commissioner or her chosen signatory will have to approve your application so please contact them to let them know you are doing the award. We will contact them as soon as we receive your application. If you are not sure how to contact your Regional Commissioner please let us know.

What’s involved…

The award is an expedition that lasts 5 days and 4 nights, covering a distance of 60 km, in a top secret location. Any member of Senior Branch can take part, in teams of two or three people. Each team will be given support and some training and also complete their own preparations.

During the Award you’ll get to stroll down country lanes, navigate your way along tracks and trails and even hit a peak or two if the mood takes you. Remember this is not a mountaineering expedition, it’s about meeting the local people in the area you are walking in and finding out things that’ll have you top of table quiz & trivial knowledge competitions for years!!! As well as all the hiking you are asked to keep a journal of your experiences and you are set a number of projects to complete along your way. These projects are designed to bring you into contact with members of the local community. You may have to find out about a local legend or meet a local crafts person or find out how locals feel about a new development. This will vary depending on the area the event is held in.

Each team is assessed twice after the hike by two separate panels made up of experienced Guiders, previous Award Leaders and previous participants. One of the panels will have read the log and project books, the other will not. Both panels are encouraged to come to a consensus in relation to each team. It is important to remember that the Award is not a competition; everyone starting the Award has an equal chance of gaining the Award at the end of the event. There is no absolute standard, experience, age and background are taken into account.

There are three levels of Award within the event. Everyone who participates receives the Award Certificate. Those who complete the mileage and submit their completed log books and projects receive the Award Woggle and finally those who do all of the above and truly enter into the spirit of the Award who benefit in a really personal way from the experience by giving a little more of themselves and gaining a whole lot in the process will receive the Chief Commissioner’s Pin.
