Event description
2020 Annual Christmas Cracker Cycle in aid of Marymount Hospice.

About this Event

In response to wonderful expressions of interest and support, the Christmas Cracker Cycle is going ahead this year. Weather and HSE guidelines permitting of course.

Once again the event is in aid of Marymount Hospice but due to Covid-19 it is being independently run in honour of the hospice and the people it cared for and continues to care for.

This year's edition is a real 'no frills' event with all donated monies going to Marymount. There won't be the usual prizes for 'Best Club', 'Best Costume', etc. There won't even be any spot prizes. However participants are encouraged to add festive cheer with costumes, decorations, etc. They are also encouraged to bring a thermos flask and mince pies or similar for a socially-distanced treat after the spin.

We've a great support crew with motorcycle marshals but are unlikely to have a back-up van. Participants are therefore strongly advised to have their own contingency plans for mechanical, physical or medical problems that might make completion on their bike impossible.

Instead of the usual start/finish at Marymount, this year's focal point will be Cork Harlequins Club. Unfortunately participants will not be able to park their cars at Harlequins. Thankfully there are many options for parking in the locality but hopefully many participants will be dropped off or cycle to the start and clock a few extra km for a great cause. To help reduce Covid-19 risks donations will only be accepted on-line and participants will be very welcome to start and finish where and when it best suits them.

The route choices are 55km (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34665425) and 85km (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34665484). There will not be any signage on the routes so please download the appropriate map to your phone or Garmin if you think you might have any issues following your choice of route.

The event will only go ahead if HSE and NPHET restrictions allow. It's for a great cause and there's clearly a great appetite for it among many cyclists.

Over the past decade the Christmas Cracker has become a gift from the cycling community to Marymount Hospice. For years its organisation has been a collaborative effort between cyclists and the Friends of Marymount. This year the Friends are unable to get involved due to Covid-19 restrictions. However people such as Jack Callanan, Anne O'Mahony and Loyola Spillett continue to inspire the organisers. With their help the event will hopefully return to Marymount Hospice next year and with YOUR help it will grow from strength to strength in the years ahead.

The organisers are extremely grateful to Cork Harlequins Club for accommodating the Christmas Cracker Cycle in this surreal and rather bleak year. Hopefully this edition will bring a bit of cheer to everyone involved and to many many more people.
