Professor Jim Lucey
Professor Jim Lucey is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and a Consultant Psychiatrist at St. Patrick’s University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.
From 2008 to 2019 Prof Lucey served as Medical Director of St. Patrick`s Mental Health Service (SPMHS), Ireland`s oldest and largest independent not-for-profit Mental-Health provider.
Prof Lucey was formerly a governor of St Vincent’s Psychiatric Hospital (HSE) in Fairview Dublin, a member of the Health Committee of the Irish Medical Council, and a member of the board of the Mental Health Commission of Ireland.
He has over 30 years experience in clinical and academic psychiatry. Previous clinical appointments include Consultant Psychiatrist at Connolly Hospital (HSE) Dublin, and Consultant Psychiatrist with responsibility for psychiatric intensive care at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital (NHS), London.
Professor Lucey was educated at St Michael’s College (CSSp) in Dublin, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and at Kings College, University of London. He graduated MB & LRCPSI from RCSI in 1983 and MD from TCD in 1990 and PhD from King’s College in 1997.
He trained in psychiatry at St. Patrick`s Hospital in Dublin and at the Maudsley Hospital in London and at the Institute of Psychiatry (Kings College, London) where he was a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow. In 2006 and again in 2014 he studied leadership andhealth services delivery at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, USA.Prof Lucey is a writer, broadcaster and public speaker. He is a regular contributor to RTÉ radio speaking on mental health issues on the Today Show with Sean O’Rourke. He is the author of two bestselling books on mental health ‘In My Room’ and ‘The Life Well-Lived’Recent public speaking engagements include ‘The Lucas Lecture’ for the Apothecary Society at the 2019 RCPI St Luke’s Festival and a key note address at the 2020 Annual Mental Health Summit. He has presented to many other clinical and non-clinical bodies including the RCPI, RCSI, ICGP, and the BMA.
