Event description

Description

To mark the restoration of the City Assembly House and to celebrate the Society of Artists in Ireland who erected the building over 250 years ago, the Irish Georgian Society will host a world-class exhibition of eighteenth-century Irish paintings from 16th June to 29th July.

The Limerick Chapter have arranged a special visit to this exhibition on Saturday 7th July - this combines a curated tour with one of the 2 concerts of 18th century music which will be held to coincide with the exhibition. (Transport and accomodation not included)

Celebrating the building’s original incarnation as the first purpose-built public gallery in Britain and Ireland, the exhibition will re-assemble paintings, including those by Thomas Roberts, Jonathan Fisher, James Forrester, Robert Carver, Robert Healy and Hugh Douglas Hamilton, in the now-named Knight of Glin Exhibition Room in which they were first displayed between 1766 and 1780.

4-5pm - Curated tour of exhibition

5-6pm - Light refreshments in City Assembly house in interval between exhibition tour and concert

6 pm - Concert with selection of works for voice, recorder and basso continuo (harpsichord and cello) by eighteenth-century composers, many of whom had a connection with Dublin, including Handel, Geminiani, and Pepusch. Featuring cantatas and instrumental pieces performed with a keen awareness of historical performance.
