The gap between the salaries of the highest and the lowest paid workers of around the world is getting bigger and bigger. While incomes for the top 10 percent of the population grow much faster than for the poorest 10 percent, real incomes of those at the bottom have actually fallen. Many middle class and low income workers have difficulties to earn enough to cover their expenses for rents, mortgages, food, health insurance and every day expenses while top managers are earning millions.

In Switzerland the ratio between lowest and highest paid worker in one company is nowadays 1:56 and was in 1984 1:6 – in 30 years that is a dramatic change. While there are no exact numbers for Ireland these Swiss numbers are indicating the scale of the gap in incomes and the trend for it to get worse. How fair is that?

In Switzerland the young Socialists have tried to tackle this problem politically: They campaigned for a 1:12 ratio which means, that no one in a company should earn more in one month than the lowest paid employee in one year.

The campaign succeeded in initiating a referendum on the 1:12 proposition, but did not gain the majority in November 2013. However, the Swiss campaign has brought the issue of income inequality and a maximum income high on the public agenda not only in Switzerland, but also in other European countries such as Spain, France and Germany.

Claiming our Future thinks it is time for the same discussions around income inequalities in Ireland and is inviting the Swiss 1:12 campaign for Fair Pay to Dublin to present their campaign and discuss the possible learnings for Ireland.
