WALKING THROUGH HISTORY - A leisurely walk featuring the fascinating history and people who lived in the local area

About this Event

Join your guide Ute Daly for this leisurely walk through local history. Bruckless is a small village but it has a fascinating and rich history. Many interesting characters lived here, and it was even immortalized in a novel!

  • We will visit the early Christian site and holy well associated with the local Saint Conal.
  • We will hear about the importance of Bruckless harbour for 18th century cattle traders.
  • Did you know that Alexander Morton, a Scottish Industrialist and founder of the world famous Killybegs carpet factory lived in Bruckless?
  • And that one owner of Bruckless House was an ardent Communist who is buried in a private grave? And that another family in the area was so influenced by him that one of the sons ended up in a Gulag? Dermot Bolger wrote a novel about those families.
  • There is also the witch who is said to have conjured a big storm that drowned many fishermen.

This walk is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, mostly on small roads but sometimes also on uneven ground, and some locations are not wheelchair accessible. Good footwear and waterproof clothing is required.

Please bring water, a face cover and personal sanitizer. The maximum number of participants is limited to 10 to ensure social distancing.
