Event description

About these sessions:

CoderDojo Bray is a coding club where the students (aged 7-17) work with each other and a group of technical mentors to learn more about building websites, developing computer games and writing program code. This block of 6 sessions will have 6 parallel related strands*:

- writing websites using HTML/CSS/Javascript

- writing games and animations using MIT Scratch 2; plus option to try Scratch on Raspberry Pi

- developing apps for Android devices with MIT App Inventor

- introduction to programming using Python and pygame

- robotics using Arduino-based robot kits

- Python, Linux and networking using Raspberry Pi.

Students are encouraged to build on their knowledge and experiment at home between sessions.

*The number of students that will be able to work on robotics and Raspberry Pi projects depends on our availability of mentors and the cost of supplying the hardware. We therefore cannot guarantee that your child will get to work in their preferred strand, although we will make every effort to accomodate their first choice.

We have a small tuck shop where we sell for a nominal fee (usually €1) a drink and a snack at break time, 3.30 during each session. You're also welcome to bring along your own snack if you like. We will also sell coffee for the adults. Any small proceeds from these sales go towards Dojo running costs.

Parents can bring along a laptop too and learn a little about coding in a separate room. No need to sign up - just come along, head for the staff room and alert a mentor to your presence.

1. Each student must bring along a laptop (not an iPad) that is wifi enabled. You must have the necessary admin rights to that laptop to allow software to be installed and network access to be configured. Adventurous owners and users of working Raspberry Pi's can bring one of those instead, together with screen, keyboard and mouse.

2. For students under 12, an accompanying parent must stay for the duration of the dojo session. Under the terms of our insurance, only students participating in the dojo are covered so we cannot accept younger children accompanying parents during the session.

3. Please download and install this software on the computer before attending your first session:

Google Chrome (

if you choose Scratch: Scratch 2: see

if you choose Python: Python: see

if you choose Robotics/Arduino: Arduino IDE V1.0.5

if you choose App Inventor:

  1. You will need a Google account to work with MIT App Inventor, so create one before the first session if you can.

  2. If you own an Android device (phone or tab), install the MIT App Companion from the Google Playstore. You can use this to do live testing of your new app! Charge your Android device and bring it along to the first session.

  3. If you don't own an Android device, there is an device emulator that you can download to your laptop here:

4. And finally, create a folder on your desktop called CoderDojo, where you can save all of your work.
