Description

About the Coder Dojo sessions:
The next block of Coder Dojo sessions will commence on Saturday 15th September at 14:30 in Presentation College Bray. Sessions are 2 hours long. There will be 6 sessions on consecutive Saturdays. The last session in this block will be on 20th October. The sessions are dependent on adequate volunteer numbers and are subject to change.

Tickets are free and will be released on a first come first served basis.Because demand usually exceeds the available places, the only way to ensure that your child gets a place is to Volunteer. See the Volunteer section of our website http://coderdojobray.com to learn how.

CoderDojo Bray is a coding club where the students (aged7-17) work with each other and a group of technical mentors to learn more about building websites, developing computer games and writing code. This block of sessions will have several parallel but related streams:
  • writing games and animations using Scratch
  • using AppInventor to build mobile phone apps
  • writing websites using HTML/CSS/Javascript
  • introduction to programming using Python and pygame
Please check our website http://coderdojobray.com for more details on these streams.

We have a small tuck shop where we sell a drink and a snack at break time at 3.30pm for a nominal fee (usually €1). You're also welcome to bring along your own snack if you prefer. We also sell coffee, tea and buiscuits for the adults. Any small proceeds from these sales go towards Dojo running costs.

Important: Parents MUST stay in the college during the dojo sessions. Under the terms of our insurance, only students participating in the dojo are covered so we cannot accept younger children accompanying parents during the session. Parents/accompanying adults can bring along a laptop too and learn a little about coding in a separate room. No need to sign up - just come along and let a mentor know.

What to prepare before the Sessions
1. Each student must bring along a laptop (not an iPad) that is wifi-enabled. You must have the necessary admin rights (password) to the laptop to allow software to be installed and network access to be configured.

2. Create a folder on the computer called CoderDojo, where you can save all of your work.

3. Please download and install the following software on the computer:
Plus:
  • if you choose the Scratch stream, install Scratch 2: http://scratch.coderdojobray.com/
  • if you choose the Python stream, install Python: http://www.coderdojobray.com/bray-dojo-python-resources
  • if you choose the AppInventor stream:
    • You will need a Google account to work with MIT App Inventor, so create one before the first session if your child doesn't already have one.
    • If you own an Android device (phone or tablet), install the MIT App Companion app from the Google Play store. You can use this to do live testing of your new app. Charge your Android device and bring it along to the first session.
    • If you don't own an Android device, there is an device emulator that you can download to your laptop here: http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/setup-emulator.html

Supporters & Future events:
CoderDojo Bray is free of charge because of the time and effort donated free by all of our volunteers and mentors, financial donations from our supporters and provision of a venue by Presentation College Bray. CoderDojo Bray would not happen without this generous continued support. If you would like to make a donation, provide equipment, or help out in any way, please contact us in the Dojo or at bray@coderdojo.com. Any funds or equipment donated will be used solely to support the running of CoderDojo Bray.
