What should I bring to the Dojo?

Accepted Answer

All ninjas should bring a laptop that has been charged ahead of the session. Please note that power outlets are limited.   As we may be using Microbits - please also bring an USB adaptor if your device don't have a USB port. Not all projects can be completed on a tablet or iPad.

Where does the Dojo take place in dogpatch labs?

Accepted Answer

From Feb 2025 the sessions will take place downstairs in the Vaults meeting room. Please note this is a change of location from the Urban Garden space upstairs.

Question 3

Do you have laptops available for young people who don't have their own device

Accepted Answer

We have a small number of laptops which will be available on a first come first serve basis! Please let us know if you require one of these when booking your ticket. There can be a high demand for these so please book early.

Question 4

Should my child/I have prior coding knowledge?

Accepted Answer

No, this Dojo is open to complete beginners. Please bear in mind that since the Dojo is not structured in a classroom lesson style, complete beginners may require parental/guardian assistance to get started and take part in activities where we have a large number of attendees.

Are you looking for volunteers?

Accepted Answer

Yes we are from time to time! We would love to hear from you - please email us on docklandsdpl.ie@coderdojo.com - please be patient with responses as this Dojo is run by volunteers.

Question 6

Are parents/guardians required to attend?

Accepted Answer

Ninja's 12  or under must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Their parent/guardian is required to remain on the premises for the duration of the session. There is seating and tea / coffee facilities near the Dojo for use. Parents are also welcome to get involved in assisting their young people!

What time should we be there?

Accepted Answer

We would ask everyone to be ready to go from 4.30pm so to check in with us from 4.20pm onwards, get a name badge and take a seat and log into the wifi and any accounts they might need in advance of the main session starting. Pick up / Finish is 6pm.

Question 8

What kinds of activities do you do in the Dojo?

Accepted Answer

There is generally Scratch, Python / Web development and some Microbit activities happening. This can vary depending on mentor availability. We encourage young people to lead their own learning and develop independent learning skills using the motto ' ask three then me'.
