Event description
Join AkiDwA in dialogue to debunk myths about Female Genital Mutilation

About this Event

In Ireland, it is estimated that more than 5,795 women and girls have undergone FGM. Data reveals that there is an increase in migrants coming to Ireland from countries where FGM is practiced and the level of FGM continues to increase significantly. In its various engagements and interactions with professionals and organisations working with migrant women, AkiDwA has realized a serious gap in the way FGM is communicated. This lack of proper communication on the sensitive issue of FGM has necessitated this conference. This is because miscommunication poses a serious risk to women and girls who are affected by FGM and the capacity of women and girls affected by the practice to integrate in the Irish society. This conference, besides creating awareness on FGM as a serious human rights violation, will debunk some of the current myths with a view to improving communication between practitioners and affected communities. We believe that when FGM related messages are communicated properly, more women and girls, and especially those communities where it is widely practiced will come to view the practice of FGM as a human rights violation and this will mark a big step in its eradication.
