DESCRIPTION

Join us at the Summer Community Gardens Ireland learning event and garden gathering!

Hosted by Donegal Community Garden Network and OURganic Gardens in Donegal, this will be a day packed with a practical workshop on plant disease by plant pathologist Professor Doohan from University College Dublin, a natural garden pest attack demonstration, a garden tour and expert advice and networking from our garden tutors and guests.

PROGRAMME

10:00 – Arrivals & Introduction

A relaxed introduction to give you the opportunity to meet and greet other community gardeners, we find this is the best time to swap stories, find new friend and share your community garden details. Joanne Butler from OURganic Gardens and Donegal Community Garden Network will give you all an introduction about how they started up and where they are now. So grab a cuppa and enjoy the morning!

11.00 - Welcome and Introduction from CGI

Our Chairperson, Dee Sewell from Community Gardens Ireland (CG Ireland) will take the helm and introduce (or update) you all on CG Ireland. This will be a brief update with some news and events to share.

11:30 – Plant Disease Workshop by Professor Fiona Doohan

UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, UCD Earth Institute

Fiona Doohan studied Microbiology at University College Dublin and Plant Pathology at John Innes Centre (PhD, 1998). After a postdoc at John Innes, she moved to UCD where she was appointed College Lecturer in Molecular Plant Pathology. In 2014 she was appointed as Associate Professor in UCD. Fiona has led various UCD and National Scientific Developments, including a national doctoral training programme on Earth and Natural Sciences. Her "favourite" disease is Fusarium head blight of wheat, closely followed by Septoria tritici blotch of wheat.

13:00 - Lunch. A delicious light lunch of local produce, and another chance to mingle and share.

EXTRAS:

Saturday 8th July - All Day

Permaculture Gathering Garden Day and Meet Up .

If you'd like to make a weekend of it in Donegal, come a day early and get dirty with The All Ireland Permaculture Gathering team in Louch Mardal, Co Donegal. The day will include a permaculture compost toilet making methal and hands on advice in the permaculture garden. This event is NOT held @OURganic Garden but at Lough Mardal which is aprox 1 hour away so call Joanne on 0861789971 for more details .

BOOKINGS:

We really need you to book your place for two reasons;

1: We need to know how many people will be there on the day to make sure there will be enough room... and enough tea!... for everyone.

2: CG Ireland does not, at the moment, receive any funding and all of our staff work as volunteers. Your contribution covers running costs for the day, and we couldn't do it without you!

We like to make our events fair and affordable for everyone, so there are 3 pricing options*:

The Standard Supporter €25. This covers all of the running costs for the day, and includes the price of workshops, talks, a light lunch and all other refreshments.

The Skint Supporter €5. We'd hate anyone to feel excluded just because they're strapped for cash, so this option covers the cost of lunch and refreshments and you get all the talks and workshops for free. PLEASE, respect the hard work that the CGIreland crew do and ONLY use this option if you genuinely can't afford the full price.

The Super Supporter. €40. Maybe you've had a good week. Maybe you're feeling a bit flush. Maybe you could consider paying a little extra to support not just this event, but all of the work that CG Ireland does all around the country, all through the year. If you can afford it we'd be eternally grateful for your contribution!
