Insights into Cork's food profile from the Cork Food Policy Council's interactive food map

About this Event

Cork Food Policy Council invites you to join us on Wednesday January 22nd from 6.30pm for an evening of discussion on the recently developed Cork Food Map, Food Poverty in Cork, Sustaining a Food Business in Cork City and the Cork Urban Soil Project in Cork City.

Chaired by Food Writer Joe McNamee* the evening will host a number of presentations:

  • The Power of Knowledge and the crucial role it can play in bringing about a truly sustainable Irish food system (Joe McNamee)
  • An Introduction to the Cork Food Map (Janas Harrington, Chair Cork Food Policy Council)
  • Utilising the food map for an assessment of Food Advertising in Cork City (Kaspars Puspurs, University College Cork)
  • Food Poverty in Cork City (Caitriona Twomey, Volunteer, Cork Penny Dinners)
  • The Cork Urban Soil Project (Virginia O'Gara)
  • Argumentum ad populum (argument to the people) - Do restaurants have a high failure rate? (J.J. Healy, Cork Institute of Technology)

Refreshments are available on arrival at 6.30pm - provided and prepared from the surplus supply of food in Cork City

* Joe McNamee has been writing about food since the late 1990s and is weekly Food Columnist/Feature Writer and Restaurant Reviewer with the Irish Examiner. He is the Munster contributing editor for the Sunday Business Post 101 Great Irish Restaurants and also writes for other publications. He is author/ghostwriter of cookbook/memoir, Clifford & Son (Liberties Press). He is a member of the Irish Food Writers’ Guild.

Joe is also founder, curator and ringmaster of Grub Circus, a travelling food ‘roadshow’ with a central ethos focussed on the transition to a truly sustainable food system. Grub Circus has appeared at All Together Now music festival, in Curraghmore Estate, Co Waterford, since it began in 2018, and at other festivals/events around Ireland.

Joe also works as a consultant for small producers, food retailers and restaurateurs.
